Conference Announcement & Call for Papers

A conference for Postgraduate Students and Early Career Researchers in Theology

Stellenbosch, South Africa

27 – 29 March 2019

We hereby invite all students of theology who are currently busy with or have recently completed a postgraduate degree in any theological discipline to South Africa’s very first postgraduate theology conference, which will be held at Stellenbosch University from 27 – 29 March 2019. The aim of this conference will be to provide students and early career researchers with the opportunity to share their research, and to meet, learn from, and exchange ideas with their peers from other academic institutions.

The theme of the conference will be ‘Theology from Below’. This theme can be construed in various ways. It can, for example, be seen to refer to (1) theologies that are speaking from the margins and challenging those ‘at the top’; or (2) theologies that are being developed in, and are concerned with the Global South, the African continent, and a country such as South Africa; or (3) theologies specifically being developed by up-and-coming scholars who stand at the beginning of their research career.

The plenary address of the conference will be delivered by Dr. Thabo Makgoba, the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town. A number of senior theologians will also take part in the program and give feedback on the papers presented by participants.

All participants whose proposals have been accepted can attend the conference free of charge, and also have the option of free housing at one of the University’s guest houses, which are within walking distance of the Faculty of Theology. We are looking forward to welcoming emerging theologians from all over South Africa, the African continent, and the rest of the world to Stellenbosch in March 2019.
