MEDIA STATEMENT ABOUT THE DEVELOPING STORY ON THE CANCELLATION OF TRIP LED BY MINISTER OF FINANCE PRAVIN GORDHAN AND DEPUTY MINISTER MCEBISI JONAS
The Evangelical Alliance of South Africa (TEASA) notes with great concern, the developing and unsettling story about the recall of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Deputy Minister Mcebisi Jonas from an investor roadshow to the UK and the US. Media reports confirmed that the trip was authorised by the Presidency and it was intended to drum up support for our economy from investors in the UK and US. A delegation representative of government, business, civil society and labour were already en route to join the delegation in both the UK and the US.
This action by the Presidency is contributing to a climate of fear, uncertainty, rumours and speculations. This is unsettling to ordinary citizens, local business and to both existing and potential investors in our economy.
Our country is in dire need of investment to grow an inclusive economy and alleviate poverty and unemployment. The government has a constitutional responsibility to create a stable and conducive environment for investment. It has a further responsibility to create a climate and environment for stability and certainty for all our citizens.
TEASA joins with all peace loving citizens to advocate for a stable, open and transparent exercise of public power by our authorities. It further calls for prudent, wise and responsible leadership over the fiscus and the economy.
TEASA is also calling on member churches to support the campaign by Save South Africa to fight for a corruption free country and for public leadership that is beyond reproach and is acting in the interest of the citizens, particularly the vulnerable, poor and the marginalized in our country.
We further call on all member churches, ministries and para-church organizations to take time this week to pray for our country and for a speedy resolution to the political impasses currently being experienced in our country.
